DIY Canvas Purse

Friday, August 11, 2017

Is it just me or is anyone else in love with those canvas bags with the black writing on them?? But sometimes the prices are just a little much for what I'm getting. So of course DIY-ing your own is the only answer! The reason I love this so much is because it is so cheap and so customizable.

Things you will need:

  • Canvas bag (craft stores sell them!)
  • Black fabric marker (you could use other colors but I like to stick to black)
  • Extra fabric that matches your bag (OPTIONAL)
  • sewing machine/needle and thread

Since I made mine for the Museum of Ice Cream I obviously wanted an ice cream themed quote so I'd say your first step is deciding a quote! I found mine off of the wonderful site of Pinterest so start searching!

Once you've found your quote/design practice it on a piece of paper so you're positive of what you want to do. Once it's on the bag its permanent!

Now grab your marker and start drawing! The type of marker I bought requires you to press down on the tip in order to have the ink come out so I suggest doing that on some scrap fabric or paper.

Once your design is on this next step is optional but I highly recommend it. The bag you buy from the store will have very small straps and I personally just enjoy the look of longer straps myself. I bought 1/4 of a yard of a white canvas material fabric and cut it in half length wise. You can either use a hot glue gun or sewing machine to hem the edges. I personally hot glued mine cause I didn't have the time to sew but if I do this again I'll for sure be sewing the edges for a cleaner look. Cut off the straps on the bag and sew on your new strap to the sides of the bag with a sewing machine for a strong attachment. If you're going to hand sew it on I suggest sewing it multiple times for a strong grip!

Make sure to tag me if you create one so I can see your beautiful work!

Love you lots!
